6 Feel-Good Foods That Naturally Boost Your Mood
When we’re feeling down, we often turn to our friends for solace or look for an activity that can distract us from our worries. Our first instinct isn’t usually to turn to food — unless it’s to dig into a pint of ice cream for comfort— but eating the right diet can actually boost your mood and your happiness overall. Whether you’re stressed out and anxious or you just don’t have the energy or motivation to get through the day, picking the right foods can help keep you feeling relaxed and upbeat.
It might sound farfetched that food can so greatly affect your mood, but research shows that certain types of diets can have a significant effect on your happiness levels. One study from the Journal of Psychosomatic Research found that people who ate a typical Mediterranean diet filled with whole and unprocessed foods such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, and olive oil were much happier than those who ate a standard Western diet that included a lot of fast food, dessert, and soda.
Eating healthy foods can provide you with the nutrients your body needs to help fight off depression and keep your stress levels at bay. If you need a little boost in your mood, try eating one of these six feel-good foods that will have you smiling in no-time.
1. Dark Chocolate
As if you need another excuse to eat the sweet treat: dark chocolate has been found to fight off anxiety and depression. One study from the Journal of Proteome Research found that daily consumption of chocolate led to lower levels of stress hormones. Cocoa also contains antioxidants called polyphenols which can help fight against depression and other mental disorders.
Make sure you opt for chocolate with 70 percent cocoa or higher, and avoid kinds with added sugar, which can actually have the reverse effect.
2. Berries
Berries such as raspberries and strawberries contain a natural ingredient that closely resembles valproic acid, a chemical used in prescription mood-stabilizing drugs. One study from the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine also found that daily consumption of goji berry juice increased people’s general feelings of wellbeing
3. Turkey
Turkey contains two important nutrients that help play a role in your mood: selenium and tryptophan. Research from the journal Biological Psychiatry found that subjects who received selenium supplements experienced a decrease in anxiety and elevated mood. Additionally, tryptophan is an amino acid that is responsible for synthesizing serotonin, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter. Increasing your intake of tryptophan results in higher levels of serotonin, which can not only improve your mood, but even your behavior.
4. Nuts
If you’re a fan of snacking throughout the day, start chowing down on some nuts. Like turkey, nuts can also help boost your serotonin levels, and it only takes one ounce of nuts such as walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts to improve your happiness.
5. Fish
Fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, an important mood-boosting nutrient. Research shows that increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids can help relieve symptoms of depression. One study from the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry even found that omega-3 fatty acids are just as effective at improving mood as an antidepressant.
6. Leafy Greens
Greens such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and other lettuce contain folic acid, an important B vitamin that plays a role in mood regulation, including the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Research from the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry shows that increasing your intake of folate can help reduce depressive symptoms.
When in doubt, you’re always best sticking to whole, unprocessed foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, but the above foods especially can help keep you calm and positive overall.

To describe my mother, in a nutshell, would be to say she was a Proverbs 31 woman. When Mom was pregnant with me, she was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease. That is when your adrenyl glands dry up. The medical field developed Cortisone but it wasn’t in the crystalized form. While I was in the Hospital Nursery, I got staph, which went all over my body localizing in my rt femur. ALtho she was really sick, she took care of me. Throughout my life I saw her as a loving mother who taught me all about Jesus’s love for me. She lived a Christian life, which was a great testimony to me oer the years. Her Faith was strong. I hope mine has been and is for my son Joshua, now grown. Mom had patience, with my brother and I. I’d have to say now that I loved her for her Faith in GOD. She would just glow, her Irish eyes seemed to glisten. She always found a way to help others in need. She was just a wonderful role model! I am glad that I was able to have her for 50 yrs of my life. I was blessed indeed, and miss her alot.

My mother Carol is quiet simply a beautiful gift from God. She has the wonderful ability to love, unconditionally. She has always been centered, steadfast, and strong enough to bend gently with the realities of life. She made sure her family survived three hurricanes and two tornadoes, floods, blackouts, sudden storms an sea, on land and in the hearts of her children. She can balance guidance, support and dicipline with a thousand other things and never miss a beat. Mom brought up my 11 siblings and I (along with many of our friends) with the patience of a saint. Mom is famously frugal and enormously generous in her thoughtfulness. She taught us to be careful, dutiful, purposeful, generous, faithful and kind. She is warm, wise, witty and simply wonderful. Mom served her family, community and Church in very subtle and silent ways most of her life.
No grandiose accolates wanted or needed.
My mom’s faith has been her rock all of her life. She is the most grounded woman I’ve ever known. Mom was selfless in doing what was needed for her family. No screaming, yelling or complaining. She kept her own challenges, if any, silent.
Mom is an amazingly strong woman. Much of her life she acted as a parenting partner, even as my
father traveled extensively for work. She was firm, fair and treated us as the individuals we were, yet nurtured the essential goals of team work. To this day, we are all close…loyal advocates and friends, without being intrusive.
Mom has survived the Great Depression, many moves and many challe ges. She carries in her heart the lessons and love!! gained during the life of two now deceased children,
and the loss of her Beloved best friend and partner of. 55 years, my dad. Never bitter, she can find the silver lining in a black hole.!!
My idea of the ideal life was to become a mom, just like my mom. Some would say that shows a lack of ambition. Hardly the truth. She is the best role model, family manager, teacher, nurse, counselor and friend a young woman could aspire to become. Like a fine wine her wisdom, grace, mercy and faith have ripened with age.
Mom was never presented a problem she couldn’t help a person solve for themselves. She is my mother and friend.Forever and always she holds my heart and respect.
Mom is now 84. Her mind is sharp as a tack, even as her brain shows signs of altizmers.
I cry as I listen to subtle change; now 1927 miles away I long to see, hug and chat with her.
And yet she accepts the realities of age as earned lapses in a full mind; like an over stuffed
closet…where you get to what you need sooner or later.
Mom accepted her life as a gift from God. What she has done with it is to leave the world a better place for thousands of people. Gods gift of this angel on earth has been our gift, in life. Mom is the
ultimate family jewel hurried in the hearts of those who know and love her.

I have been involved in a long drawn out fight with the VA. I uncovered fraud and abuse, and abandonment of patients; when I brought it to the attention of the leadership I was severaly retaliated against and still continue to suffer. My mother passed away on New Year’s day last year. Knowing that she was not going to last long, I flew home to be with her. She was still awake when I got home. She asked me how my job was going. Not wanting to alarm her, I told her that every thing was fine. She knew that I was hiding the truth from her. She said, “You are a palladin (God’s warrior) and you must persevere against tyranny. Tomorrow you will have a new guardian angel.” Those were her last words to me. She died the following evening. Her words give me courage and bolster my faith in Almighty God and His son Jesus Christ, I intend to stand my ground and fight till the leadership of the agency and the country recognize that we must fight for the veterans who have fought so valiantly for us. God Bless my mother, God Bless our soldiers and God Bless America.

My Mum was special because she always believed in me.
She was always proud of me, no matter what I was attempting to do.
My self-esteem and sense of worth comes from God, through my mother.

My Mother is special but not for the normal reasons people would expect. She is special because she had the tenacity and strength to endure being married to my abusive and mad father. Why did she not leave him? Firstly, in the past, wifes could not just ‘leave’ their husbands. In particular, my Mother was illiterate, did not speak the local language well enough, had no support network (no friends and no family) & was a new migrant in a foreign land. Looking back, I think she also suffered from depression too. Yet, by the grace of God, we both are still in live and perfectly in tact, thanks to our wonderful Lord Jesus Christ.

my mother is the name of emotion, kindness and sincerity.Ican not imain my existence without her.It is most pricious gift of god for me. I regard every word synonimous to it as it is the name of not a human shape but it is an ‘aehsas’ that goes to the souls directly.

my Mom went to her heavenly home twenty some years ago, leaving to me the legacy of a Christian mother; she was the epitomy of the Proverbs 31 woman.

My mom is in a nursing home by choice since losing my dad some 3+ years ago. She is 91 and very sharp but her body is failing due to hard work, and improper medical care earlier in life. We were raised on a farm,5 of us, and it was a hard existence. Everyone worked, including my grandparents who lived with us for about the first 20 years. My mother was always there. She answered questions truthfully, openly, and meted out discipline in a way as not to belittle but strengthen us. She gave constant guidance, support, and reinforced the principles she had learned in church over her young life. She is a rock in the storm, a beacon of light, to guide and direct our lives over the bar. She continues to mete out advice, trusting in God’s principles and teachings, especially to me @ age 61 now widowed and dating again. She is beautiful, both inside and out, and has a heart of gold. There will never be another like her. And i thank God every day for her, and her teachings: she is the source of my faith and strength.

My mom went home to be with the Lord in Nov.2008. I miss her every moment. She was so precious. She took care of all the three of us.after we lost our dear dad when we were teen agers. She lived 35 yrs. as a widow, striving to see her children come up in life. Most of my life she lived with me and few years with my sister. When I was scared and anxious as a child she taught me Ps.91 and that gave me courage.she was always prayerful praying for anyone whom she met. Mornings she would kneel down to pray.I know she was praying for me and my child and my grand children. Becuase she knelt we stood up. She taught me to be kind and patient and talk to Jesus always and praise His holy name. Though I know she has a better life now, yet I misss her as nothing can replace the name “MOTHER”

My Mom like everyone elses Mom was an amazing lady. She always managed to see the best in everyone, even if there wasn’t much of the best to find. When she felt like I wasn’t living the way I should I would find Guidepost and other things to inspire me in the right direction, just surpriseingly laying on a table where I always sat to rest, useally ones with pictures of someone she knew I admired on the cover. She has gone to heaven now, and I know she is one of God’s angels….Happy Mothers Day Mom.

Our Mom was called a Saint by many & I never understood exactly what they meant. NOW I TRULY DO!!! Our father was a VERY ABUSIVE ALCOHOLIC. In those days, there were NO SUPPORT SYSTEMS, POLICE DEPTS. DIDN’T DO MUCH UNLESS THE VICTIM WAS KILLED, NO REFUGE FOR THE MOMS OR KIDS LIKE TODAY. We shuttered in fear EVERY SINGLE NIGHT WHEN HE WAS DUE HOME. My mother took care of 3 kids, one of which was special (handicapped – had braces on her legs from hips to ankles, also moderately retarded w/ cerebral palsy.) My special sis is a TRUE ANGEL. Dad was a wonderful person, but grew up in a horrible enviroment. Unfortunately, when he drank, all of his pain came pouring out on Mom. Mom was brutally beaten weekly for 40 years. She was an exceptional typist clocked at 120 wpm on an old IBM manual typewriter. Dad broke 9 fingers in one beating. Mom worked & most times had 2 – 3 jobs, took care of us 3 kids (all of us are 1 yr. apart in age) was the light in my special sis’s life. We are all very, very close. Mom never felt truly loved, her own mother was tough as nails, NEVER, EVER ONCE TOLD MY MOM SHE LOVED HER, MOM’S 1st husband left her for no apparent reason, Dad was 2nd & last husband & abused her physically, mentally & emotionally, I was acting out my pain by being verbally abusive to Mom, don’t know why, there was so much pain in our household daily, yet I loved her soooo much. I guess she was my scape goat as they say. Unfortunately, for Mom, I was not there for her when she passed away. NOW, I HAVE THE PAIN OF ALL OF THIS TO LIVE W/ FOREVER, SINCE I DID NOT RECOGNIZE HOW WONDERFUL SHE REALLY WAS. She has been gone for 10 yrs. & I still wish I could make it up to her. She felt loved by Jesus and my 2 sisters. My dad & I really let her down. SHE TRULY DID NOT DESERVE NOT FEELING LOVED MOST OF HER LIFE. SHE IS IN HEAVEN NOW, FINALLY AT PEACE & I PRAY THAT ALL SHE TAUGHT ME ABOUT JESUS & SEEING HER AGAIN WILL BE TRUE, SO THAT I CAN in some way be a better person & love her the way I should have the first time. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT STILL HAVE YOUR MOMS, TAKE CARE OF HER, LOVE HER, TELL HER YOU LOVE HER OVER & OVER AGAIN, BRING HER FLOWERS, TAKE HER LUNCH. GIVE HER YOUR BEST, BECAUSE SHE WILL BE GONE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT & MAYBE WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT. TRUST ME, YOU DON’T WANT REGRETS WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR MOMS. THERE IS ONLY 1 MOM!!!!!!! SHE GAVE YOU LIFE, GIVE HER YOUR LOVE IN RETURN. (please note those of you that have abusive mothers, try to get them help, if you can’t or she won’t participate, still love her, pray for her & take care of yourself. But, still do the best you can w/ what you have – after all, one day we will all be judged by our almighty HEAVENLY FATHER. GOD BLESS TO ALL MOMS, YOU HAVE THE MOST IMPORTANT JOBS IN THE WORLD AND THAT IS RAISING YOUR CHILDREN. Pam 🙂

My mother was a saint. She raised eight children (myself being the youngest) and she was tireless in her efforts to let us know how much we were loved. She always commented when she was younger that she hoped to live long enough to see all of her eight children out of high school. Well, she got her wish. When I, the eighth child, graduated from high school in January, this wonderful, lovely, Christian mother of our died in August the same year. She was only 60 years old.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY, MOM. Thank you for being the wonderful, loving mother that you were.

I lost my mom back on August 11, 2010 so this is my First Mother’s Day without her. My mother was 1st my mother 2nd my BEST FRIEND. We worked together with my Father’s Business. I got to see her everyday. And my husband and spent every other weekend at either parents house. My mom and I always went shopping at least 2 times a week. And we always took her to Church. Sadly Alzheimer’s robbed me of her but in a way my Dad was ready for her to finally join him. Which my father passed away in 2000. I just have to say that in one word because I am not a good writer she was EVERYTHING. And should God choose to give me Alzheimer’s I hope that I can face it with the Grace & Dignity that she did for 10 years. I miss you Mom and love you. You are #1.

Bringing up 8 children was no joke, and that too single handedly and selflessly becoz all my father did was earn the money. From 5.30 am to 11 pm she would work at feeding, clothing, educating and teaching us to be in awe of God. I admire her most for the religious teachings she inbibed into us becoz today ALL 8 are on the straight path. We have been blessed to have the BESTEST IN THE WORLD mom. Happy Mothers Day Mom. We love &Admire you Mom

My mom died 13yrs ago. As I grow older I think of her looking down at me and saying I told you you’d get wrinkles too!!! I love my mother because she and my father adopted me. They chose me and as they always told me that’s what made me special. I didn’t understand my mother’s faithfulness to God, and now I do and have for many years. She taught me to be a strong woman who could take care of herself so that I would be able to take care of others. And that’s what I’ve done. I guess the thing I miss the most is I understand everything that she was trying to tell me, and I can’t tell her that I finally get it…well I do, I talk to her quite a bit!!! Love you mom….
